Performance Evaluation of Layer 2 Switch with Frame Preemption

(in English) Ethernet is prevailing in industrial networks which are applied in, such as vehicle, train and factory due to its high capacity and cost effectiveness. In such networks, frames of high priority (such as control frame) are multiplexed with low priority frames (such as information frames), such that their end-to-end delay requirement may not be satisfied. This paper focuses on IET, which has a mechanism of frame preemption to improve the high priority frames` latency performance. This function was implemented in a layer 2 switch and therein its performance was evaluated. It was shown in the experiment that the latency improvement for high priority frames can be up to about 1/8 compared to conventional switch.
