Fast Aggregation in Probabilistic Population Protocols
Ryota Eguchi, Taisuke Izumi (Nagoya Inst. of Tech.) COMP2018-6
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we propose a new aggregation algorithm in probabilistic population protocol model with a base station. Specifically, for any monoid $(X, +)$ the algorithm aggregates all inputs and outputs the sum of the input $s = sum_i s_i$ with high probability. Its convergence time is within $O(sqrt{n} log^2 n)$ time both expectation and with high probability. The amount of states that ordinary agents use is $O(|X^2|)$ (equivalently, $O(log |X|)$ bits). To the best of our knowledge, no algorithm for this problem with sublinear time and achieving independence of the input size $|X|$ was known before our work. We also propose a simulation
method for the streaming computation. Specifically, if the streaming computation computes a function using $O(log^c n) $ bits of memory, then our algorithm simulates the function with complexity $O(sqrt{n}log^2 n)$ time and $O(log^c n) $ bits of space.
