Consideration about evaluation method of road surface roughness by amplitude statistics of sound waves reflected from the road surface

(in English) Spatial information measurement such as road surface measurement and road obstacle detection is useful for automatic operation of automobiles or autonomous mobile robots. Therefore, many researches and developments about this technology have been conducted. We have studied about an evaluation method of road surface roughness using reflection characteristics of sound waves from the road surface. In this report, the relationship between the amplitude statistics of reflected waves and road surface roughness is discussed by experiments and computer simulations in which sound waves with different frequencies are transmitted to road surfaces with different roughness. In the experiments on asphalt road surfaces, it was found that there is a possibility that road surface roughness can be evaluated from the relationship between the model parameter γ of the Rice distribution which is fitted to the probability density function of amplitudes of reflected waves and phase variation component kσ_z. Moreover, overall trends in the experiment and the FDTD simulations generally agreed. Therefore, the validity of the proposed method could be confirmed.
