Since the knee joint is known to be one of the most vulnerable parts in the human body, its 3D bone model-based motion analysis has been done in order to understand pathology and causes of knee diseases. Knee motion is usually described as translation and rotation between the coordinate systems constructed on the femur and the tibia. A 3D bone model has been reconstructed from CT images up to now, but recently it’s also reconstructed from MR images due to the advantages of non-invasiveness and soft-tissue model inclusion. However, the conventional tibial coordinate system cannot be applied to this model, because the MR model is usually reconstructed merely around the knee joint. Then, we proposed an approximate tibial coordinate system which can be reconstructed on tibial MR model. As a result of calculating translation/rotation components using the proposed coordinate system, the maximum RMS error was 2.73 [mm] and 2.35 [deg], respectively. Thus, the approximated tibial coordinate system is nearly the same as the conventional tibia coordinate system, but for clinical application, further improvement should be done using shape information of the knee such as the inclination of the joint surface. |
