A Wear Model of Commutator and Brush Taking Account of Arc Erosion for DC Moto Driving Automotive Fuel Pump

(in English) A carbon flat commutator and carbon brush are widely used in a DC motor driving an automotive fuel pump. The authors have reported the commutation phenomena in various fuels, gasoline, ethanol and others such as arc duration and wear/erosion of brush and commutator. As well-known the brush and commutator wear/erosion increases when the arc occurs. In the previous authors’ works the arc erosion part on the commutator can be clearly recognized for carbon flat commutators. By analyzing the commutator surface by the laser microscope the mechanical wear and the arc erosion can be separately estimated. Consequently, it can be made clear that the arc discharge not only generates arc erosion, but also increases the mechanical wear. It is probably because the erosion by arc decreases effective sliding area of the brush and it causes the increase of current density. In this report a wear model considering the increase of the current density is proposed and brush wear is calculated based on the model. Further the calculated wear is compared with experimental ones.
