This talk provides an overview of advanced space division multiplexing (SDM) technologies that we have developed over the past few years for realizing long-haul SDM transmission systems. Differential mode delay (DMD) and mode dependent loss (MDL) remain dominant transmission impairments in fewmode fiber (FMF) transmission. A novel transmission technique that cyclically permutates spatial mode signals in every span avoids DMD-induced pulse broadening, and intermodal interference canceler significantly mitigates MDL impacts on mode division multiplexed signals. By combining these techniques, we have successfully demonstrated record-long SDM transmission experiments over FMFs with transmission reach exceeding 2500 km for a 12-core × 3-mode multicore FMF and 6300 km for a single-core FMF. |
