The frequency modulation of brain wave by diurnal rhythm in hippocampal slices

(in English) The physiological activity of animal’s brain is modulated by diurnal rhythm that has the cycle of about 1 day and depends on light/dark cycle of the surrounding environment. In addition, the behavioral studies has demonstrated that the performance of memory is modulated by diurnal rhythm. Theta and beta rhythms are related to the memory process. However, the relationship between the brain waves and the diurnal rhythm has not yet been clarified. Hence we investigated the relationship using the neural oscillations in rat hippocampal slices with the administration of carbachol. The dependence of Zeitgeber Time (ZT), the time in the diurnal rhythm, on the oscillation parameters showed that the frequency of beta oscillation was significantly lower at ZT 16-19 than the other ZT’s. The decrease was reproduced by the application GABAA receptor antagonist Bicuculline or Gabazine with carbachol to beta oscillation induced in the slices in the other ZT’s. Those results suggest that the brain wave in the hippocampus will be modulated by diurnal rhythm and GABAA receptor will be involved in the modulation.
