Subjective experiments were performed to develop speech intelligibility (SI) prediction metrics for both hearing-impaired (HI) and normal hearing (NH) listeners. Listening test was performed with noisy speech sounds with additive bubble noise. Speech enhancement conditions were (1) unprocessed, (2) a spectral subtraction, and (3) a Wiener filtering. Normal hearing listeners participated in a set of experiments to listen either (1) direct sounds or (2) sounds processed by an HI simulator. Results showed that speech intelligibility with the HI-simulator condition was less than 20 percent even in the highest SNR. Confusion matrices revealed consonants with high-frequency components were largely confused with other consonants because the HI simulation reduced high-frequency components. |
