Alexithymia is a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotions, and is associated with impaired recognition of emotional facial expressions. Prior research has suggested that alexithymia represents a deficit in conscious experience of emotion. However, little is known about the relationship between alexithymia and accessibility to consciousness of emotional expressions. We induced binocular rivalry by presenting two different pictures (face and mosaic stimuli) and investigated perceptual predominance of facial expressions in high and low alexithymic groups. Results suggested that the high alexithymic participants could not discriminate emotional valence of the facial expressions during binocular rivalry. |
