An optical power transmission technology that supplies electric power by irradiating laser light to a solar cell is attractive. Optical “wireless” power transmission using a light beam will bring new services and industries through innovation of electric equipment and systems. Power-over-fiber transmission is also important and applications are expanding. These technologies are very feasible since the main devices used in these new optical power transmission technologies are already available laser light sources and solar cells. However, further improvements in the performance of these devices are required. In this paper, the current status, problems, and prospects of these devices are discussed. |
