Polymer optical waveguide circuit for high bandwidth-density on-board interconnects

(in English) To realize free optical wiring patterns on printed circuit boards (PCBs), we represent to fabricate low-loss graded-index (GI) polymer optical waveguides with shuffling structures, in which both core crossings and curved cores are included. First, we fabricate S-shaped curved waveguides and crossing waveguides independently to estimate the bending loss and crossing loss, and design and fabricate the shuffling structure based on those results. In the obtained GI shuffling waveguides, the shuffling loss is independent of the crossing angle. Therefore, it is revealed that by reducing the crossing angle, the foot print required for the shuffling structure can be reduced, so GI core can contribute to high-density wiring. For further high-density wiring, we fabricate the highest density shuffling waveguide and successfully fabricate a shuffling waveguide with of 0.28-dB crossing loss.
