Wavelength-reuse is a technique for WDM-PON that realizes color-less optical network units (ONUs), where the downstream signal light is used as a seed light of the upstream signal. The authors have proposed a wavelength-reuse technique utilizing a Fabry-Perot ethalon (FP) and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), where the FP and the SOA are used for suppressing high and low frequency components, respectively. In this paper, the authors report a system that automatically tunes the transmission band of FP to downstream signal wavelength, and describe the effect of the automatic band tuning on transmission characteristics. From the results of the experiment, it was found that tuning time of the proposed system increases with the amount of wavelength shift of downstream signal. The tuning time increased by approximately two seconds for one-gigahertz increase in frequency shift. It took about 53 seconds for the system to become stable in case of 15.3-gigahertz frequency shift. Results of the bi-directional transmission experiment show that automatic band tuning system operates with a power penalty of 1 dB or less compared with the case of fully-tuned transmission band. |
