Low-group-velocity and low-dispersion 2D-GaAs-photonic crystal waveguide for highly efficient terahertz wave generation

(in English) The terahertz (THz)-wave is expected to be applied to various fields, for example, in spectroscopic sensing, nondestructive imaging, and high-speed wireless communication, and the development of an efficient THz-wave source has been required. The difference frequency generation (DFG) process, which is a nonlinear optical phenomenon, is one of the most promising techniques for highly efficient THz-wave generation. We have proposed a highly efficient THz-wave generation method using a DFG process in a GaAs-based two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide (PC-WG). The low-group velocity of light in the PC-WG enhances the electric field of the propagating pulse light and the low-dispersion mode matches phases between two propagating light pulses. This low-group-velocity and low-dispersion (LVLD) PC-WG mode can realize highly efficient THz wave generation. In this work, we optimized the PC-WG structure for realizing a LVLD mode and investigated the effectiveness of THz-wave generation in the LVLD PC-WG by numerical simulation.
