We have focused on the control of molecular alignment of pentacene thin film for improving carrier mobility of pentacene thin film transistor (TFT). We used photo-reactive gate insulating film for controlling the molecular alignment of pentacene deposited on the film. From XRD (X-ray diffraction) measurements, in-plane XRD patterns of pentacene deposited on UV-processed polymer gate film clearly show the controllability of the crystal orientation of the pentacene film through controlled molecular alignment of pentacene. We fabricate pentacene TFTs for investigating the effect of pentacene molecular alignment on the carrier mobility, and the results showed the anisotropic carrier mobility ranging from 0.2 cm2/Vs to 0.5 cm2/Vs, depending on the alignment direction of pentacene. Moreover, we clarified that the larger in-plane anisotropy of polymer gate insulating film leads to the higher anisotropy in carrier mobility in pentacene TFTs. |
