Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, sterilization by ultrasound has drawn attention because it has none of the disadvantages present in conventional methods (heat, ultraviolet, chemical) such as food taste/color denaturation and environmental pollution. Many studies on the inactivation of bacteria and fungi using ultrasound have been reported. In our previous study, we reported the inactivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae of fungi and Escherichia coli of bacteria. In this study, we generated ultrasound at 6 frequencies (20 kHz, 400 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 2.3 MHz, 3.4 MHz, and 4.4 MHz) against Bacillus subtilis (spore and vegetative cell). In addition, we irradiated ultrasound of high acoustic power density for spores that are generally thought to be difficult to sterilize. For the evaluation, colony count, particle size distribution measurement, turbidity measurement, and SEM observations were used. Physical cell destruction was confirmed in cells (vegetative cells and spores) after irradiation with ultrasound.
