Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, numerous studies on the inactivation of microorganisms in water have been reported. One such study deals with the disruption of microorganisms by ultrasonic waves. Thus far, we have conducted disruption experiments on different microalgae at different ultrasonic frequencies, and reported that the frequency characteristics differ for each species. Therefore, we observed that the main factor responsible for the disruption phenomenon is the mechanical resonance of the organisms themselves. In this study, we focused on the size of the sample alone. As a substitute for microalgae, melamine resin microcapsules having equal size and wide particles were used. The suspension was irradiated with ultrasonic waves at frequencies of 20 kHz, 400 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 2.3 MHz, 3.4 MHz, and 4.3 MHz. For the evaluation, particle size analysis and observation by SEM imaging were carried out, and the correlation between the ultrasonic frequency and particle size in the destruction phenomenon was examined. We observed that smaller size capsules were destroyed as the ultrasonic frequency increased. This is consistent with the conclusions of theoretical resonance analysis in microcapsules.
