Real-time UHD Video Processing System on the Network

(in English) We conduct experiments of live-streaming video-handling system for uncompressed 8K ultra-high-definition (UHD) video on Japan Gigabit Network (JGN) operated by National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and on SINET5 network operated by National Institute of Informatics (NII). To transmit an uncompressed 8K video, we develop a multi-lane transmission method that can transmit uncompressed 8K-UHD video as multiple 1.5-Gbps or 3-Gbps high-definition video streams. Several uncompressed 8K video formats (e.g., the 24-Gbps 8K-DG and 48-Gbps 8K-Full, and so on) are available. Several physical 8K-UHD video interfaces are available and specifications of these interfaces depend on that format and speed of them. Therefore, even if we connect 8K-UHD video equipment correctly, we might not get correct video image. On the other hands, we need to negotiate maximum transmission unit (MTU) for all network that video packets pass through. If this negotiation process would not be performed completely, the video packets might be fragmented, or discarded. It is difficult to transmit such 8K-UHD video through wide area network and playback the video.
We propose a new 8K-UHD video-transformation node on network to solve such problems caused by differences of video formats and MTUs. We implemented a function to convert videos to the appropriate format that can be played back in receiver device in real time into the video-transformation node. In this paper, we introduce this system and experiments that we conducted in Interop Tokyo 2017 by using this prototype system. In addition, we report evaluation of its performance in the laboratory.
