A Study on AQM for Micro-burst in Data Center

(in English) Short-term burst traffic in data center network, called microburst, is one of the most important technical problems for communication quality of data center applications. Since microburst rapidly increases queue length, it causes packet loss or increase of flow completion time. In our paper, our preliminary evaluation reveals that short flows whose aggregation arrival causes microburst should be detected in early stage of congestion and long flows should be regulated when buffer size is large enough for obtaining high throughput. To satisfy these our findings, we propose a new active queue management scheme, MA-ECN(Microburst-Aware ECN). It provides short flow buffer and long flow buffer, and individually applies different thresholds for ECN. Low threshold ECN for short flows gives early stage congestion detection and large threshold for long flows expects high throughput. Our simulation results show that our proposed MA-ECN individually controls ECN marking and improves short flow completion time with keeping high throughput of long flows.
