Proposal of Reflective Circuit and Variable-Attenuation-Phase Shifter with Independently Controllable Amplitude and Phase

(in English) Variable attenuators and phase shifters are used in various wireless systems. However, there are few reports for miniaturization by combining them. In this report, we propose a reflective circuit that makes both amplitude and phase variable, and suggest that variable-attenuation-phase shifter can be constructed using the proposed circuit. The reflective circuit is searched for topology from the condition that amplitude and phase can be independently controlled. The proposed circuit is composed a 3-dB directional coupler terminated with a variable resistor and two variable capacitors. The proposed reflective circuit is shown the operation principle from the derived circuit equation. It is theoretically shown that the attenuation amount and the phase shift are independently controlled by the variable resistance and the variable capacitance. In demonstration, we adopt branch-line hybrid coupler for 3-dB directional coupler and fabricate it. The variable-attenuation-phase shifter is constructed by the fabricated reflective circuit using the circulator and is evaluated. As a result, it is shown a good agreement with the calculated result.
