Joint Deployment of Virtual Routing Function and Virtual Firewall function in NEV-based Network with minimum total network Cost

(in English) The algorithm to determine the place where network functions are located and how much capacities of network functions flexibly are required is essential for economical NFV-based network design. The authors proposed an algorithm of virtual routing function allocation in the NFV network for minimizing the total network cost, and developed effective allocation guidelines for virtual routing functions. The authors also evaluated the effect of the maximum tolerable network delay on the guidelines for the allocation of virtual routing functions.
This paper proposes the joint deployment algorithm of virtual routing functions and virtual firewall function to minimize the total network cost. Our evaluation results have revealed the following: (1) Installing a packet filtering function which is a part of the firewall function near the source area can reduce wasteful transit bandwidth and routing processing and thereby reduce the total network cost. (2) The greater the number of packets filtered by packet filtering function, which are additionally deployed at the source area, and the higher the circuit bandwidth cost compared with the routing function cost, the more the reduction of total network cost is increased. (3) The greater the circuit bandwidth cost relative to the routing function cost, the greater the reduction in the total network cost by the statistical multiplexing effect.
