Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) As a quantitative representation of facial expressions, a recent method uses relative contribution rate of basic categories of expressions. However, it is obvious that it is impossible to represent all the facial expressions by combinations of these basic categories. In this paper, following the dimension theory of psychology, we attempt to propose a quantitative representation of facial expressions using spacial coordinates.
In the dimension theory of conventional psychology, psychological space of expression is created by subjective evaluation such as SD method and reduced to low dimensional spaces by MDS or PCA. However, it is difficult to describe direct correspondence between physical stimuli and psychological responses in these psychological expression spaces. We propose to construct a facial expression space from the face expression image space by introducing a metric tensor called expression discrimination threshold. It is then possible to obtain a space in which physical stimuli and psychological evaluation are associated together for the first time. Besides, without using categorical classification, facial expressions can be represented and investigated quantitatively using coordinate values in this space. In this paper, we show how the facial expression space is constructed and discuss its significance.
