A survey was conducted on the use of personal computers and the Internet by blind and visually impaired people. Among 304 respondents, 288 people (94.7%) used personal computers. The survey results are as follows: The most popular operating system was Windows 7. The most popular screen reader was PC-Talker 7. NVDA, a free screen reader, showed a sharp rise. Nearly half of low vision PC users used high contrast, adjustment of mouse pointer and letter size, and magnifier functions that are included in the operating system by default. Refreshable Braille display users decreased whereas portable braille notetaker users increased. Most respondents used email, Web browser, word processor and editor, and spreadsheet software. Problems in using PCs raised by most respondents were the lack of Web accessibility, concretely speaking, inaccessibility to images and PDF files, and inaccessibility to CAPTCHA. The solutions to these kinds of inaccessibility were required of the PC usage environments as well as inclusion of a screen reader by default. |
