Visualization of Cavitation Bubble and Ultrasonic Pulse Transmission Generated by Snapping Shrimp

(in English) It is important to survey biological transient noises produced by snapping shrimp, which may be the main noise sources in ambient noise imaging applications in coastal waters. The authors had gathered some samples of snapping shrimps in Hashirimizu Port at Yokosuka, and had measured those sounds in laboratory conditions, previously. Those results showed the weak positive correlations between the source levels and the length of claw (length of body), and the omni-directionalities of the generated sounds. In the present study, the visualization of the cavitation bubble and ultrasonic pulse transmission generated by snapping shrimp was conducted. The samples were captured in Hashirimizu Port at Yokosuka and Uchiura Bay at Numazu. The movies obtained by Schlieren method showed that the single bubble is generated when the claw is closed, the spherical wave with very short pulse length is radiated directly after the bubble is collapsed, and the spherical wave transmission repeats every collapse of rebounded bubble.
