Ingestible devices are electronic devices placed in the gastrointestinal tract for diagnoses or monitoring. To power these millimeter-sized electronics in body without batteries for a prolonged residence inside body is challenging. In this paper, ellipsoidal coils with efficiency enhancement by an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is proposed to have a wideband, highly efficient, and safe wireless power transfer (WPT) for an ingestible device. The mid-range strongly coupled magnetic resonance (SCMR) WPT is applied. The EBG, which consists of unit cells of mushroom structure, is applied at the transmitter to enhance transfer efficiency and reduce the peak specific absorption rate (SAR) in human tissues. At 1.44 GHz, power of 3.4 dBm can be transferred to the receiver within the SAR limit (IEEE Std C95.1TM -2005), which is sufficient to power a range of ingestible devices. |
