This report discusses the helicopter all-around obstacle detection using quasi-millimeter-wave radar systems. The purpose of the on-board radar is to detect and avoid obstacles such as surrounding objects, high-voltage power lines and pylons that may affect flight safety. We have been developing the forward looking 76 GHz small transmitting power millimeter-wave radar system. In addition to that, the utilization of the 24 GHz quasi millimeter-wave system is proposed for the all-around obstacle detection of the helicopter. Firstly, the configuration and specification of the 24 GHz quasi millimeter-wave radar module for the all-around obstacle detection system is discussed based on the measurement results. Secondly, the all-around obstacle detection 24 GHz quasi millimeter-wave radar is developed to carry out the fundamental experiments. Then, the obstacle detection test using the all-around obstacle detection system and the multicopter is demonstrated to examine fundamental performance of the developed system. |
