Coverage Expansion of Vehicular Millimeter Wave Communication with Multi-hop Relaying

(in English) A small road side unit (RSU) coverage of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications for autonomous vehicles is an open issue. This paper proposes a multi-hop relaying method with vehicle-position controlling in order to solve this problem. The key idea is maintaining and creating line-of-sight (LOS) paths to extend the multi-hop relay length by changing vehicles’ relative positions. The position control can be realized because autonomous vehicles decide their own movement. We define a coverage ratio for each vehicle as the proportion of areas where vehicles can connect RSUs using mmWave multi-hop relaying. We show the lower and upper bounds of the average of coverage ratios. Simulation results show that a coverage ratio of 80 % can be achieved with the proposed position control, even when only 7.5 % of all the vehicles are controllable.
