Measurements and Analysis of Ultra-Wideband Propagation Channels within Passenger Cars

(in English) In the last years there has been a growing demand for wireless links in vehicles. Narrowband systems, such as conventional wireless LANs, however, suffer from multipath fading in metal-enclosed environments and thus need a substantial amount of fading margin. Ultra wide-band (UWB) signals are expected to suffer less from multipath fading. In this paper, frequency-domain responses (from 7.25 to 10.25 GHz) of about 4,500 points within a compartment were measured with a vector network analyzer. Spatial distributions of UWB path gain, delay profiles, and delay spreads were derived from those responses. Bit error rate (BER) performance of the wireless communication applied a combination of UWB and direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) within a passenger-car was evaluated through simulation using these measurement data.
