Analysis of induced electric field in the cerebellum by ctDCs

(in English) In recent years, there has been a growing interest in noninvasive neuromodulation of specific brain regions. One of the well-known methods is tDCS (transcranial direct current electrical stimulation) which modulates the brain activity by applying a direct current of about 1-2 mA for 5-30 minutes through two electrodes attached to the scalp. This method has been shown to be effective for rehabilitation of people with cognitive and mental disorders. Recently, ctDCS (tDCS targeting the cerebellum) has been proposed as a therapy for human motor function disorders. However, only a few studies have investigated the distribution of the induced electric field in the cerebellum for ctDCS. In this paper, we analyzed the computed electric field distribution in the cerebellum using a realistic head model for common electrode configurations of ctDCS. As a result, we found that depending on the position of the electrode near the cerebellum, the induced electric field distribution can be modified according to a region of interest.
