Design of Millimeter-wave 4x4 Butler Matrix for Feeding Circuit of Multi-beam Antenna Using Finline in Multilayer Substrate

(in English) Multi-beam antennas which can cover wide angle with high gain are attracted for practical applications of millimeter wave technologies. Butler matrices are widely used in multi-beam antennas for beam forming networks which give required beam directions. Discrete beam-scanning can be fulfilled by switching input ports. Although microstrip line is popular to compose Butler matrix, radiation loss and poor circuit isolation are serious due to the radiation at discontinuities on the feeding circuit. A multi-beam feeding circuit of 4x4 Butler matrix using a finline in multilayer substrate is designed at 76GHz in this work. The finline structure is composed of three dielectric substrates and two via-hole arrangements. Unlike waveguide, various circuits can be easily designed by using popular planar slotline techniques. The effect of this structure is confirmed by electromagnetics simulation in this paper.
