BER Performance Evaluation of OFDM/PM Systems with CSS Method for Satellite Communications Systems

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We consider to apply orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) schemes to satellite communications systems. OFDM schemes have advantages of their high-speed data transmission and their high frequency efficiency. On the other hand, a major drawback of OFDM is its high peak power. In satellite communications systems, since nonlinear amplifiers are used, OFDM schemes are difficult to be applied due to their high peak power characteristics. Therefore, we consider to apply phase modulated OFDM schemes. Because of this, an OFDM/PM scheme for generating a constant envelope signal by secondary modulation an OFDM signal with PM investigate. In this paper, we apply cyclic shifted sequences (CSS) method as peak power reduction technique of OFDM signal in order to effective use phase space of PM. We evaluate BER performance of OFDM/PM scheme with CSS method by computer simulation. Simulation results shows that the BER performances are improved by CSS method by approximately 1.5 dB whatever the modulation schemes (QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM, 256QAM) we use.
