Wormhole Attacks on Duty-Cycling Wireless Sensor Networks and Their Countermeasures
Wang Wen Yang, Takashi Minohara (Takushoku Univ.) SS2017-32 DC2017-31
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless sensor networks(WSN) which employ a large number of wireless
sensor nodes to monitor physical or environmental conditions has
attracted many attentions. However, there are power management issues
in WSN. Usually wireless sensor nodes are required long life time with
small size batteries or solar panels, and they periodically
sleep in order to reduce power consumption. So, any special mechanism
for communication timing synchronization must be used, because sleeping
nodes cannot receive signals.

Because the open nature of the wireless communication, WSN will face
security issues. Wormhole attack is one of the most serious attacks
against WSN, since wormholes are created with regular routing
procedure. Most of proposed methods against wormhole attack assume
continuous operation, but it is not satisfied in low-powered WSN. In
this paper, we focused on an actual behavior of wormhole attacks in
duty cycling WSN, and propose some countermeasures.
