Preliminary Experiment of Sea Ice Thickness Measurement by Ground Penetrating Radar

(in English) Observation of sea ice thickness is one of key issues to understand regional effect of global warming. The utilization capability of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to sea ice thickness measurement is discussed in this paper. At first we implemented numerical simulation based on FDTD in order to understand reflection phenomena in the measurement, and then we summarized the flowchart of ice thickness estimation. The GPR survey was demonstrated in brackish lake (Lake Saroma). The estimated thickness is almost reasonable according to the result of the direct measurement in a relatively dry condition of snow and ice, and we concluded that the GPR can be applied to sea ice thickness measurement under the certain condition.
