Application for GPR Survey to Faults in Mogod Earthquake in Central Mongolia

(in English) The 1967 Mogod earthquake (M=7.1) occurred in central Mongolia, which was the largest earthquake after the installation of the World Wide Standardized Seismograph Network (WWSSN) in Mongolia. In August 2016, we conducted field survey in Mogod river basin. The main objective of this survey was to demonstrate near range subsurface accurate imaging by GPR and to understand underground properties of layers. The radar system was operated at 100 MHz with unshielded antenna, moved along a section to give high resolution 2D sections different two lines. The distance between two survey lines was about 2 km. The length of Line 1 is 300m and Line 2 is 500m. We conducted five CMP (Common Mid Point) and VES (Vertical Electric Sounding) measurements on Line 1 and two CMP and VES measurements on Line 2. From these survey, we determined location of reflection layers and the velocity of EM waves. The some interesting structure and some reflection layers which were defined by CMP method and reflection profiling method. In cross section Line 1 and Line 2, we could clearly observe the near surface geological structure, horizontal layers and faults. The velocities of reflected waves were estimated by CMP processing. We compared the results obtained by CMP processing and resistivity by VES and could find some relations.
