A Video Bitrate Selection Method to Reduce the Traffic Volume While Maintaining QoE

(in English) It is reported that users who use the video streaming service emphasize less traffic volume than quality. However, since the existing bitrate selection method used to the video quality control focuses only on increasing the quality as much as possible, there is a problem that the traffic volume tends to increase. In this paper, we propose a novel bitrate selection method that reduces the traffic volume while maintaining QoE. The proposed method predicts the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) and the buffer length when a certain time elapses after selecting a certain bitrate sequence. Then, the top element of the bitrate sequence with the MOS exceeding the target value and having the smallest traffic amount is selected. This method was evaluated by using the real throughput data measured at the LTE network. As a result, the proposed method can reduce the traffic volume by up to 78% compared with the existing method while maintaining 90% of viewing to the MOS target value.
