Speeds and directions of the motion of rain areas that cause the attenuation of Ku-band satellite communications links are estimated from the broadcast satellite (BS) signal levels simultaneously obtained at Neyagawa campus of Osaka Electro-Communication University (Neyagawa, Osaka), its Shijonawate campus (Shijonawate, Osaka), and its high school (Moriguchi, Osaka). The speeds and directions of rain area motion are compared with the ground wind velocities observed by nearby AMeDAS stations at 3 locations from 2008 to 2011. As a result, a considerable relationship is found between them, and the ground wind directions still show correlation coefficients of around 0.5 with the directions of the rain area motion, although the directions tend to be aligned in the northeast and southwest directions corresponding to land and sea winds, respectively, along the area of Osaka plains. Thus, the AMeDAS data seems to be hopeful to determine the direction of earth stations when the site diversity techniques are conducted. Also, the ground winds from northeast are shown to be primarily detected in rain time, indicating that the land winds are superimposed on the winds associated with the rain front motions. So, some kind of corrections may be needed for the ground wind to be applied to the operation of the site diversity techniques. |
