| (in English) | In this paper, we investigate a hitherto unexplored possibility of inflectional directionality that past tense forms are bases for present tense formation. Specifically, we design and conduct two ?wug? tests (Berko, 1958) on Japanese verbal inflection in two opposite directions, past → present and present → past, and the experimental observations are explicitly evaluated against the predictions of the computational model, Minimal Generalization Learner (Albright & Hayes, 2003). The results of two experiments reveal that experimental observations are strongly predicted by model predictions in the past → present direction, but only weakly in the present → past direction. We conclude that the directionality of inflection plays a pivotal role in morphological productivity, independently reflected in language acquisition (Klafehn, 2003; Murasugi, 2010). | |
