This work investigates reaction times (RT) between words with different degrees of phonological restrictions (tone/syllable structure) (115 words) in a lexical decision task (40 adults). RTs are compared between non-words with violation (NV), words with ?relaxed? restrictions (loanwords (LR) vs contemporary words (CR)), and canonical words with no violation (CN). Results suggest that phonological restrictions become more ?relaxed? in loanwords than in contemporary words, in agreement with Ito and Mester (1995). Lowest to highest RTs are from CN, LR, NV, and CR. F- test significant differences are found for every pair, except LR vs NV. |
