OFDM Visible Light Communication using off-the-shelf video camera

(in English) Visible Light Communication (VLC) is one of the communication technologies which can control commu- nication areas because of the directivity of light. Challenges of VLC using off-the-shelf video cameras mounted on smartphones are related to its low communication speeds (a couple of kbps at maximum) and short exposure time setting for decoding on-off keying signals. In this paper, we propose a novel VLC method which works at an arbitrary exposure time value and achieves higher communication speeds than conventional methods. In the proposed method, symbols encoded by Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and modulated by Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) are transmitted from LED surface illuminations. Transmitted symbols are captured by sensors of a rolling-shutter video camera. We revealed that our method can communicate more than 10Mbps ideally. The theoretical formula shows that there is a change in the phase amplitude characteristic of the carrier wave depending on the exposure time of the camera, and its consistency was confirmed by simulation and measurement experiment. We plan to improve the communication speed and extend the communication distance of the proposed method in our
future work.
