Proposal and Evaluation of a New MAC Protocol with Higher Priority on Transmission by Access Point for Wireless LAN

(in English) CSMA/CA based MAC protocol of wireless LAN has a problem of large ratio of management time to data transmission time especially when the data transmission rate is high. Some new MAC protocols were proposed to solve this problem by shortening the time gap between control frames. However, the improvement of these conventional protocols is limited to at most several percent of reduction in the ratio. This paper proposes a new MAC protocol where a newly defined control frame is used to decrease the number of control frames transmitted and received by AP, and higher priority is given to transmission from AP by controlling BO. The proposed protocol can achieve several tens of percent reduction in the ratio, which is around ten times improvement over the conventional protocols.
