Experimental Study on Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging for Millimeter Wave Automotive Radar

(in English) In recent years, automatic driving technologies of vehicles as well as advanced safety driving technology have been widely studied.Especially, the MW automotive radar has been attracting attentions in order to realize safety driving even in the bad weather condition. In such a condition, accuracy of the self-position estimation will be improved easily by the 2-D imaging using the MW radar to identify landmarks like traffic signs and guardrail. To realize the high resolution imaging systems with the MW radar, a large aperture antenna would be the easiest way. However, it is often difficult because of the size and cost. Therefore, we propose to adopt the SAR technique to realize the high-resolution side-looking imaging radar. In this technique the large antenna aperture can be obtained virtually by using the movement of the vehicle. In this paper, we provide the feasibility study of the automobile MW SAR for surrounding objects detection. Furthermore, preliminary experimental results of the automobile MW SAR are shown to demonstrate the performance of the proposed radar concept.
