Latency and Synchronization Analysis of Figure-Ground Selecitive Cells in V4

(in English) Figure-Ground (FG) segregation is visual processing that distinguishes objects (figure) from backgrounds (ground) within the visual field. FG-selective cells reported in monkey visual cortical area V4 have been considered responsible for FG segregation. Although the single cells showed low correct rates for the FG discrimination, a group of them has been considered to show higher correct rates in computational analyses. However, how the responses of FG-selective cells are integrated to evoke the FG perception has not been clarified. In this study, we investigated whether the desynchronization of FG-selective cells in the V4 contributes to FG discrimination. To investigate the hypothesis, we analyzed the latency for FG modulation and the synchronization among FG-selective cells from electrophysiological recordings. Our results showed that the latency for FG modulation was 77ms. This is 6 to 10 ms longer than the latency of Border-Ownership selective cells reported in V2, suggesting the importance of the feedforward pathway from V2 to V4 in FG discrimination. It was also found that the group of FG-selective cells showed weaker synchronization than that of non-FG-selective cells. This result agrees with the previous studies, suggesting that FG-selective cells reduce the synchronization during FG computation.
