A preliminary study was conducted to design a foot exercise system for promoting motivation and adherence to physical activity. In the study, we examined the physical and psychological effects of light foot exercise in the sitting position, which involves alternately dorsiflexing left and right ankle joints in three different cycles. Eight healthy adults who were classified into different stages of adherence to physical activity in accordance with the transtheoretical model participated in the study. Blood flow around the left knee and pulse rate were measured. Perceived exertion and affective valence of the participants for the exercise were assessed using Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale and Feeling Scale (FS), respectively. The results of the experiment showed that the intensity of the proposed foot exercise was moderate as blood flow during the exercise increased in all the participants while the changes in pulse rate were moderate on average. The FS and RPE Scale scores in each exercise cycle differed among the participants regardless of physical activity adherence. In conclusion, affective valence for exercise was dependent on the individuals, regardless of their adherence to physical activity in the case of moderate exercise, and the system design needs to take into consideration individual variability. |
