An Experimental Study on Standing Method of Japanese Martial Arts -- Effect on postural balance and dissolution of relationship with a physically-contacted opponent --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In martial arts, controlling information exchange with the opponent (i.e., reading opponent’s intention and hiding one’s own intention) are important, as well as not controlling one’s own body. In the present study, the authors picked up a standing method of Japanese martial arts, named “Suichoku-Ririku (vertical take-off)” (SR standing), which is said to have an effect to dissolute of relationship with a physically-contacted another person, and measured the muscle activities (i.e. EMG) and body sway with this standing method. We also examined whether or not “light touch effect” was affected by this standing method. First, simultaneous contraction of antagonist muscle pairs was observed at lower limb joints during SR standing. Second, the correlation of the body sways of two mutually-contacted persons was reduced when one of them took SR standing. On the other hand, “light touch effect” was maintained even if one took SR standing. These results show that the effect of "dissolution of relationship” of SR standing does not mean the block of the sensory information obtained at the contact point, but mean the elimination of balance control structure that two contacted persons depended on each other.
