The effect of viewing distance on preferred physical size of high-resolution moving images

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recent flat panel displays (FPDs) are becoming larger and offering higher resolutions. Since parts of the human visual system are scale dependent, perceptions and impressions of displayed images can change with the size of the image. We performed a psychophysical experiment to measure the preferred physical size of moving images displayed on an 8K ultra-high-definition FPD and to examine the effect of viewing distance. The results indicate that the preferred size varied over a twofold range and strongly depended on the content of the images. This finding did not vary with viewing distance, but the absolute (retinal) preferred size did. Participants preferred only a 11% larger image on screen at the longer distance (1.6 m, a 61-degree horizontal angle of view) compared with that at the shorter distance (0.8 m, 100 degrees). This suggests that preferred image size may be determined as the size on the screen rather than on the retina, indicating that optimal movie production should change with the size of the targeted screens.
