Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia built collaboratively by the general public. There are no restrictions about updating information such as pages and links on Wikipedia in principle. Due to this open editing policy, the amount and value of information on Wikipedia has been rapidly expanding. In this study, we focus on the growth process of Wikipedia and discuss its similarity to the BA (Barabasi-Albert) model which is well-known algorithm for generating random scale-free networks using a preferential attachment mechanism. The results of analysis based on the popular DBpedia dataset reveal that Wikipedia is growing in a way which is not completely identical to the preferential attachment mechanism of BA model. Therefore, we propose a generalized BA model which can represent the growth process of Wikipedia. |
