Service Function Chaining (SFC) provides the ability to define an ordered list of network services. It’s supposed to be consist of service function on several virtual machines in NFV (Network Function Virtualization). SFC is one of the most important feature of NFV which is for flexible service deployment, but most of service providers don’t enthusiastic to adopt SFC actually because bottleneck of Inter-VM communication (IVC) is critical for their service quality. For realizing SFC based services, it’s required to improve performance of IVC. In this paper, we suggest Soft Patch Panel (SPP) which is a new approach based on Intel DPDK to satisfy both of requirements of performance and flexibility. Currently, SPP only support 1:1 communication and it’s inadequate to cover several use cases such as load balancing or redundancy of service entities which require N:N communication. In general, duplication of packet causes degradation of performance because of the cost of data copy. However, N:N communication enables users to configure more variety of network services even if performance is degraded. As an extension, we have studied to design and implement N:N communication on SPP. In this report, we also report design and evaluation of the feature. SPP is the fruits of collaboration of NTT and Intel. |
