Data Spreading Schemes Using Rateless Codes for Wireless Sensor Networks with Energy Harvesting

(in English) On the condition that batteries and buffer sizes of sensors are limited and that new data packets are generated, this report proposes a scheme to broadcast data packets in wireless sensor networks employing the rateless code for data collection. Owing to such limitation of the sensors, packet loss may occur. Especially when data packets are frequently generated, some data packets cannot be sent before the batteries run out or the buffers overflow, which leads to serious packet loss. To alleviate the packet loss, the proposed scheme sends data packets to neighboring sensors before the batteries run out or the buffers overflow, on the assumption that the energy harvesting provides electric power for the sensors and that the limited electric power is used for wireless communications. When the sensors can correctly receive transmitted data packets, they calculate the exclusive OR between rateless coded packets and received packets, and store the resultants. Computer simulations under Rayleigh fading conditions show that the proposed scheme decreases the average packet loss rate by over two orders of magnitude and improves the average bit error rate including the packet loss, compared with the conventional scheme.
