Numerical study on mode coupling in connection between few-mode fibers

(in English) The mode division multiplexing using few-mode fibers (FMFs) is one of techniques to increase the transmission capacity in the optical fiber transmission system. The most critical issue is compensation or/and suppression of crosstalk due to mode coupling in FMF transmission and on connection between FMFs. Although the crosstalk can be compensated for by using the digital signal processing in the receiver, the mode dependent loss (MDL) originated from the mode coupling could remarkably degrade performance of FMF transmission. In this paper, we investigate numerically the mode coupling due to the mechanical misalignment such as the lateral offset, the end gap, and the end angle between FMFs. Modeling these misalignment, we evaluate the mode coupling and MDL due to misalignment in 10-mode fibers. The result suggests that the lateral offset is dominant for MDL and it courses the penalty by 0.1 ~ 0.2 dB
