This paper describes the advanced optical characteristics of a high-density 1000-fiber cable with SZ-stranded units housing rollable 80-optical-fiber ribbons. We clarify both the cabling loss and the temperature cycling loss change dependence on the minimum allowable bending radius (Rm) of the fibers by using a cable assembled from fibers with various bending characteristics. The measured cabling loss with an Rm of 14 mm is less than 0.1 dB/km, which is very much lower than that of previously reported S-stranded 1000-fiber cable with rollable optical-fiber ribbons. The measured mechanical characteristics also meet the requirements for conventional optical fiber cable. |
