Sensitivity to mistake of of register choice in 5- and 7-year-old children.

(in English) We are required to behave appropriately to suit the situations where we are in. One of the behavioral controls is a selection of linguistic register which suits to the listener, and making a mistake to select linguistic register sometimes means rude behavior to the partners and provides bad impressions to them. Although previous studies showed that children have a sensitivity to linguistic register from their early development and 5- to 6-year-olds almost understand the appropriate relationships between listener and linguistic register, do they also understand the meaning of mistake of register choice? Moreover, do they use the mistake of register choice as an index of evaluation of others? This study investigated whether and when children understand the meaning of mistake of register choice and how they evaluate people who make mistake in register choice. The results showed that 7-year-old children, but not 5-year-old children, understand the meaning of a mistake of linguistic register. In addition, 7-year-old children used linguistic register as an index of selective learning and preference, although purposes of use seem to be different depending on individual linguistic register. These results suggest that there is a relationship between the use of linguistic register as an index of evaluation of others and the understanding the social meaning of the use of linguistic register.
